Really, plant-based eating should be called “plant-heavy” eating or “plant-focused” eating, because that’s all it is. With plant-based eating, you can still eat meat products.  But, to get the biggest health benefits, focus on eating as many high-quality plant foods as possible and minimizing meat products (including dairy).

Two important phrases there. “high-quality” and “plant foods”. Let’s start with the last one. What’s a plant food? Anything that is made from a plant that grows from the ground. You can find plant foods in every food group (except meat and dairy, of course).

If the first plant foods that come to mind are fruit and veggies, you’re on the right track! Grains are plant foods, too. So, that includes rice and flour (made from wheat plants), and quinoa and barley. There are protein-heavy plant foods like beans and legumes (i.e peanuts and chickpeas). There are even fatty plant foods like pumpkin and flax seeds, avocado and olives. We’ll talk about how to choose high-quality plant foods tomorrow.
