PF-ing Dinner: What "Plants First" Looks Like

PF-ing is a Byte Eating Method that makes it easier to benefit from the green goodness of fruits and veggies

Happy Will Power Wednesday, ppl. Last wknd, we tried micro-tasting. Today, try "PF-ing", that's where u eat plants first in each meal.

Pile ur plate w fruit/veg +half-the-usual portion of the rest of the meal (meat, grains etc). Eat all your plants first, then sit w ur stomach. R u even hungry anymore? See my version of PF below.

PF-ing with pizza, broccoli and cauliflower

I PF’ed last week

Dr. Wuse (@drwuse), here. I’ll put it out there. I’m a PF-er (Plants-first); and not because I’m such a perfect eater, but because I’m totally not. That’s the beauty of PF-ing. It makes up for our nutrition slip-ups by helping us balancing out the processed foods in our meal with as much phytochemical magic as possible.

So, this was my dinner a couple nights ago. Came home from work, exhausted as usual. Bae is usually good for having dinner prepared or nearly finished around the time I get home, but he was wiped out from work, too. Sooo, we reached for a frozen pizza (cue scary music here-phantom of the opera or GET OUT or whatever…I don’t know your life ; )

Obvi, we couldn’t eat only the pizza for dinner. Again, not really because we’re such healthy eaters (I’ve had only pizza for dinner before, and I’ll probably do it again), but mainly, it was mad small. (Shout Trader Joe’s mushroom flatbread. It’s tasty but teeny). Luckily I had some broccoli and cauliflower in the fridge, so we micro/steamed that, sauteed it with some red onions, garlic, a lil’ jalapeño, and we had a respectable meal.

Now, for the PF maneuver. I grabbed 2 heaping serving spoonfuls of the veggies and 2 small squares of the pizza where I would usually start with 4 squares. I ate all my broccoli mix before touching the pizza, and lemme tell you…the SCRUGGLE was real! Those fibrous veggies filled me up so much, I could barely finish them. By the time I got to the pizza, I could only manage one small square.

Best parts of PF-ing:

1) I ate my veggies :)

In the picture, you can easily see that the veggies take up 100-200% more space than the pizza, which is in keeping with the USDA’s MyPlate guidelines.

2) I saved money (the pizza def costs more than the broccoli/cauliflower, so it makes sense to fill up on the less expensive food)

3) I avoided guilt and FOMO…at the same time.

And voila! PF accomplished. This isn’t like the end of one of those crazy SUV commercials where they drive through a volcano or something…this is a thing you ABSOLUTELY SHOULD try at home ; ). When you do, leave a comment or @ us (@bytewellness) to let us know how your PF experience was.
